Rescue of Chibok Girl Lydia Simon and Kids by Troops a Decade Later

After a decade of captivity, Nigerian Army troops in the North-East region have successfully rescued Lydia Simon, a Chibok girl previously held by Boko Haram insurgents.

The Department of Army Public Relations disclosed this development in a statement released on Thursday.

During the course of Operation Desert Sanity III in the Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, troops managed to save Lydia alongside her three children from the clutches of the terrorists.

Identified as serial number 68 among the Chibok Secondary School girls who were abducted, Lydia was found to be five months pregnant at the time of her rescue, revealing her origins as Pemi Town in Chibok.

In a separate incident, Nigerian Army troops engaged in counter-terrorism operations in the North Central region effectively thwarted an ambush by neutralizing three terrorists who were planning to carry out destructive activities.

As per information provided by the parents of the abducted schoolgirls, 271 students were initially kidnapped, with 57 managing to escape shortly after in 2014. Through the combined efforts of the Federal Government and the state government, 103 and 20 girls, respectively, were freed. Nonetheless, it was stated that 92 students still remain in captivity.
