The Tough Decision Made by NFF President Gusau Regarding Finidi as Super Eagles Coach

In the recent announcement, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, acknowledged the challenging nature of the decision to appoint Finidi George as the head coach of the Super Eagles.

Replacing the Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, Finidi was officially named as the successor on Friday.

Among the contenders for the position, the 53-year-old was chosen over his former international teammate, Emmanuel Amuneke.

Reflecting on this decision, Gusau shared in an interview with the former Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye, “It was a decision that involved careful consideration.”

He further added, “It is essential for us to start placing trust in our own talents. Finidi will have our full respect and support throughout his tenure.”

Finidi’s immediate focus will be guiding the team through the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin scheduled for June.
