‘Near-death’ thieves narrowly avoid public punishment in Umuahia

Two individuals engaged in robbery, with a particular focus on stealing from passengers, narrowly escaped facing a violent crowd’s wrath in Umuahia, located in Abia State.

Incident occurred near the popular Golden Guinea Breweries along Aba road in the state’s capital.

Their modus operandi involved either hypnotizing their victims or brandishing sharp objects to intimidate them, before stealing their money and mobile devices, subsequently using the phones to access their bank accounts.

Fortunately for them, their criminal streak came to an abrupt end when an irate mob apprehended them, subjecting them to severe physical assault and destroying the tricycle they utilized for their crimes.

Reports suggest that a passenger, previously victimized by the duo, raised an alarm upon recognizing them upon entering their tricycle once more.

The commotion attracted a gathering which included individuals who had fallen prey to the “One Chance” tactic in the past.

As the crowd swelled, the alleged robbers purportedly admitted to their crimes, imploring for leniency from the furious onlookers, as recounted by a local resident named Moses Nnakwe.

Despite their pleas for compassion, the mob showed no mercy, resorting to brutal violence, with some individuals even contemplating setting them on fire.

Thankfully, the timely intervention of some elderly persons in the crowd prevented the suspected criminals from facing a more gruesome fate.

As of the time of this report, the Abia State Police Command had not issued a statement regarding the incident.
