Man captured with fake naira notes by Enugu police

In Enugu State, a 24-year-old suspect named Mmaduabuchi Okonkwo has been apprehended by the police for allegedly possessing and dealing in counterfeit naira notes.

According to a statement released by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the arrest took place at the Old IMT Bus Stop on Abakaliki Road in Enugu on April 10, 2024, around 3pm with the help of law-abiding citizens.

The statement revealed that Okonkwo, a resident of Mkpologu, Emene, Enugu, was found with a total of ₦40,000 in suspected counterfeit one thousand denominated Naira notes.

He was reported to have boarded a minibus and handed over one of the fake notes to the driver. However, the driver noticed the forgery, raised an alarm, and subsequently led to the suspect’s arrest.

During interrogation, Okonkwo confessed to exchanging N25,000 genuine Naira notes for the counterfeit notes worth N50,000.

He admitted to having spent N10,000 of the counterfeit notes, and the remaining N40,000 was seized from him.

Once the investigations are completed, the suspect will face charges and prosecution.

Last week, the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre arrested Muhammed Zenabdin in Abuja for criminal conspiracy and possession of suspected counterfeit $100,000 notes.

Additionally, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency recently intercepted a commercial bus in Abuja transporting N3.2 million counterfeit cash, which belonged to three suspects, including an eight-month pregnant woman.
