The Banishment of Six Palace Officials by the Oba of Benin

In a recent development, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has taken action against six palace officials who had falsely positioned themselves as emissaries of the palace during an event involving the Ooni of Ife.

The suspension of the individuals was initially communicated by Chief Sam Igbe, the Iyase of Benin, on behalf of the Benin Traditional Council in a letter dated April 26.

A subsequent statement signed by Osaigbovo Iguobaro, the Chief Press Secretary to the Oba of Benin, and dated April 29, 2024, confirmed that these suspended officials have now been banned from participating in any palace activities.

The individuals in question are Johnbull Igbinosun, Iduhonre Ihogbe, S.E. Aigbiremwen, Efesieoghoba Ogbelaka, Ogbeide Osagie, and Osamudiame.

It was stated that these individuals, in their attempt to deceive, made false claims about their relationship with the Oba of Benin during a visit to the Ooni of Ife, an act considered disrespectful to Benin customs.

As a result of their misconduct, they have been officially barred from the Oba Palace in Benin City, Edo State.

The banned individuals confessed their wrongdoing during a disciplinary hearing led by Chief Ekhoerovbiye Oviasogie, the Uwangue of Benin.

Consequently, the committee, led by the Uwangue of Benin, found their actions to be a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the Benin Kingdom, leading to their suspension.

In addition to the suspension, these officials have been stripped of their Benin royal beads, titles, and any recognition as palace functionaries—these were ceremoniously returned to the ancestors.

Furthermore, the banned officials are no longer permitted to represent themselves as affiliated with the Benin palace or partake in any traditional ceremonies in Benin.
