Court rules against Obiano in trial, charges to remain

An application by former Anambra state governor, Willie Obiano, questioning the authority of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prosecute him has been rejected by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Obiano, accused of N4bn theft, is currently facing nine charges in court.

In a preliminary objection presented by his lawyer Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), Obiano argued that the EFCC did not have the jurisdiction to try him and requested that the charges be dropped for being an abuse of the legal system.

He maintained that there was insufficient evidence to incriminate him.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, delivering the ruling on Thursday, deemed the application baseless and ruled in favor of sustaining the charges.
