Woman faces charges for allegedly taking N2.1m from deceased boyfriend’s bank account

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court arraigned Ihuoma Onunyere, aged 42, on Wednesday, on accusations of stealing N2.1 million from her late boyfriend’s account. Onunyere, a businesswoman residing at 16, Joseph Harrison St., Iwaya area, Yaba, Lagos, was charged with theft and entered a plea of not guilty.

During the court proceedings, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Innocent Odugbo, stated that Onunyere allegedly committed the theft between October 27 and November 20, 2023, in Yaba, Lagos. The prosecutor alleged that the defendant withdrew N2.1 million from the account of Mr. John Nwanu using his mobile phone app subsequent to his passing.

It was reported that Ruth, the late man’s daughter, identified the unauthorized withdrawal and promptly informed the authorities, leading to the police station receiving a report of the incident.

The prosecution highlighted that the defendant’s actions contravene Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The Magistrate, Miss M. F Onamusi, granted the defendant bail in the amount of N200,000 along with two sureties of equivalent sum. The case was adjourned until May 8 for further proceedings.
