The NBA’s Decision to Implement E-Voting for the 2024 Election

The Nigerian Bar Association has announced its plan to utilize an electronic voting system for the upcoming 2024 election. This innovative approach will enable members to engage in the voting process conveniently, regardless of their geographical location.

At the launch of the nomination process in Abuja, the association’s Electoral Committee, headed by Oluseun Abimbola (SAN), revealed this significant development. The NBA election is set for July 20, 2024, and will see participation from registered members representing branches across the nation. By April 20, 2024, the committee is expected to finalize the list of successful candidates.

In his remarks, Abimbola emphasized the committee’s commitment to ensuring a transparent process. He reassured, “Our electronic voting platform facilitates voting from diverse locations and guarantees transparency. Detailed guidelines will be issued to govern each phase of the election, with continuous updates provided throughout the progression of the process.”

When questioned about real-time result access, Abimbola confirmed that candidates and their representatives would have backend system privileges. Addressing the sheer size of the NBA membership, he noted the importance of candidate representation throughout the election. The stringent verification measures to be carried out by the candidates and their representatives were highlighted to maintain credibility and transparency.

Regarding system access, Abimbola clarified, “While certain individuals, namely the candidates and their representatives, will be granted backend access, it is imperative to limit general access for security reasons. This approach minimizes potential security risks associated with widespread access to the backend system.”

As of Monday, the committee had received over 50 submissions for various positions within the association. Abimbola shared, “We have already received 50 submissions for the available positions. Once the application window closes, the applicants and their desired roles will be made public.”
