Shanty and Slum Dwellers Receive Final Eviction Notice Ahead of Abia Government’s Demolition

A deadline has been set by the Abia State government for the residents of slums located behind Okigwe Park in Umuahia to vacate the area by Thursday this week.

Bulldozers are scheduled to begin demolition on Friday.

Dishing out the ultimatum was Uzo Nwachukwu, the Chairman of the Abia State harmonized task force and commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, during a visit with the steering committee to the area.

Nwachukwu revealed the impending demolition of the slums by the government, noting that the area will be cleared to make space for the numerous illegal motor parks situated around the Isigate axis of Umuahia.

He conveyed that operators of the illicit motor parks around Isigate have been instructed to relocate to Okigwe Motor Park and Aba Park until the central motor park provided by the state government is ready for use.

He emphasized the dedication of the current administration to eradicating thugs and slums from the state while creating a favorable environment for businesses to flourish.

Also addressing the situation were Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, the General Manager of Umuahia Capital Development Authority, and Victor Ikeji, the Chairman of Umuahia North LGA, who mentioned that trade activities around Isigate Umuahia and nearby streets would soon be halted.
