NDLEA Annihilates Large Quantities of Illicit Drugs Confiscated in Lagos and Ogun

A colossal amount totaling 304,436kg kilograms and 40,042 litres of illicit substances seized from various areas in Lagos and Ogun states has been obliterated by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

During a brief event in Badagry, Lagos, the chairman of the agency, Mohamed Buba Marwa, revealed this significant destruction on Tuesday.

Marwa emphasized that the disposal of the confiscated illicit drugs was carried out in compliance with court directives and urged for greater public backing to combat the challenges of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in Nigeria.

Highlighting the diversity of the substances, Marwa mentioned, “The materials being disposed of include illicit drugs of solid and liquid forms such as cocaine, heroin, cannabis, and tramadol, among others.”

Operatives of the NDLEA had seized these drugs from different locations in Lagos and Ogun states since the beginning of 2022, particularly at key entry points like seaports, airports, and land borders, Marwa revealed.

“The amount of drugs to be eradicated today through court order comprises 304,436.055kg of solid drugs and 40,042.621 litres of liquid drugs, reflecting the extensive reach of illicit drug activities,” he stated.

He extended gratitude to traditional leaders, security agency heads, religious leaders, members of NGOs and CSOs, and all present at the event.

Marwa underscored the importance of stakeholders’ involvement, stating, “The public’s presence here underscores the significance of this event.”

While asserting NDLEA’s unwavering commitment to combat the drug menace in the country, Marwa urged for enhanced support from the public for the agency.

Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Chairman of Badagry West Local Government, Mr. Olusegun Onilude, commended NDLEA’s efforts in combating the illicit drug trade in the nation.

“Illicit drugs serve as a catalyst for almost all criminal activities, hence, the Lagos state government acknowledges NDLEA and its leadership in the relentless battle against illicit drugs. The magnitude of illicit drugs destroyed today is alarming, raising concerns for every conscientious individual,” he remarked.

He also appreciated the Agency for extending the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) social advocacy campaign to schools and communities across Lagos State.
