Man sentenced to jail for theft of car gearbox

Sentenced by a Jos Magistrates’ Court, a 28-year-old businessman named Peter Sunday will serve a one-year jail term for thievery of vehicle parts worth N200,000.

Following Sunday’s guilty plea, the Magistrate, Mr Shawomi Bokkos, promptly handed down the sentence.

However, Bokkos granted the offender an alternative to pay N30,000 in addition to compensating the complainant with N100,000.

Emphasizing that the punishment aims to dissuade potential wrongdoers, the magistrate delivered the verdict.

Earlier, Insp Labaran Ahmed, the Prosecutor, informed the court that the incident was reported on March 19 at the “B” Police station Bukuru by the complainant, Stephen Dung.

Allegedly, the convict trespassed into a mechanic workshop and made away with the gearbox, with his arrest taking place while attempting to sell the stolen item.

The Prosecutor noted that the offence is punishable under the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
