Man Arrested in Enugu for Possession of Counterfeit Naira Notes

On April 10, Enugu State Police apprehended a 24-year-old man named Mmaduabuchi Okonkwo, who was suspected of dealing with fake Naira notes, according to the Enugu Police Command.

Spokesperson of the Command, Daniel Ndukwe, stated in a release that Okonkwo was nabbed by operatives from the Abakaliki Road Police Division, with the assistance of vigilant citizens.

During the arrest, a sum of N40,000 in suspected counterfeit one thousand denominated notes was seized from the suspect.

“A preliminary investigation unveiled that on his journey from New Haven Junction to Old IMT Bus Stop in Enugu, the suspect used one of the fake notes to pay the minibus driver,” Ndukwe explained.

“The driver, however, detected the counterfeit currency and promptly raised an alert, leading to the apprehension of the suspect.”

Upon questioning, Okonkwo admitted to exchanging N25,000 in real Naira notes for N50,000 worth of counterfeit Naira notes with an accomplice.

He also confessed to having already spent N10,000 of the fake money, with the remaining N40,000 recovered from his possession.
