Lagos State Safety Commission Takes Action Against Shops near Transformer

Following safety violations, the Lagos State Safety Commission has sealed two shops located in front of a transformer on Martins Street, off Broad Street.

In response to a petition from a concerned citizen regarding safety rule breaches, the Director-General of the Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, took action by closing down the two lock-up shops.

The primary objective of the commission is to ensure the safety of lives and property within the state.

A statement released on Wednesday stated that the decision to seal the two shops was prompted by a petition highlighting concerns about a transformer situated directly in front of the shops at 148, Broad Street, Marina, Lagos.

According to the statement, initial investigations revealed that a transformer had been installed right in front of the two shops. The proximity of the barricade to the building’s wall, along with a gas generator placed near the transformer, was deemed a significant risk factor for potential fire hazards and harm to both people and the environment.

Urging the public to stand by the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards safety violations, the commissioner stressed the importance of adhering to safety regulations.

In a similar move last November, the government took action by sealing eight commercial lock-up shops on Dosunmu Street, Lagos Island, which were unlawfully storing firecrackers in unsafe conditions.

The Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Gbenga Oyerinde, highlighted that the shops were closed down to safeguard the lives and properties of residents in the area from potential fire outbreaks and explosions.
