International Women’s Month is all about celebrating women and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu shows us how it’s done

International Women’s Month is a time to honor and celebrate women, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated how to do just that. On International Women’s Day 2020, Governor Sanwo-Olu launched the first of a series of initiatives under the #Eko4Women campaign to mark this year’s celebration themed, #EachForEqual. He paid tribute to women who have made significant contributions to the history of Lagos through an animated #Eko4Women video, which was released on March 8, 2020, on the Governor’s official Twitter page. The video highlighted the roles of iconic women such as Efunroye Tinubu, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Alimotu Pelewura, and Ajoke Ahmed, emphasizing their influence on the values cherished in Lagos today.

The Governor also sent personalized letters of recognition to 200 women across the state as part of the International Women’s Month festivities. The recipients included influential figures from various sectors, such as Abah Folawiyo, Opral Benson, Joke Silva, Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, Osaretin Demuren, Folorunsho Alakija, Juliet Ehimuan, Dr. Ajoritsedere Awosika, and Patricia Obozuwa.

Prominent personalities, including Linda Ikeji, Tosin Oshinowo, Dakore Egbuson-Akande, Deola Sagoe, Bella Disu, TY Bello, Kemi Adetiba, Asisat Oshoala, Tara Durotoye, Kate Henshaw, Betty Irabor, Nelly Agbogu, and Sola Sobowale, took to social media to express their enthusiasm about the Governor’s gesture. Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the invaluable role of women in the progress of Lagos in his letter, stating, “There is no doubt that Lagos State, Nigeria and the world would be a much poorer place without women in it.”

#Eko4Women is Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s tribute to the pioneering legacies of visionary women in the history of Lagos. He acknowledges that the Greater Lagos narrative should encompass every individual, from high-flying executives to market women, schoolgirls, and every woman in between. The Governor celebrates women for their daily efforts in making the world a happier and more equitable place.
