Nigerian Government Projects Completion of Kano-Daura Rail Project by 2025

Assuring the public, the Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, confirmed that the Kano-Daura rail project is on track to be finished by 2025 during an interview with NAN in Abuja on Friday.

Highlighting the significance of the project, Alkali emphasized its priority status within the ministry’s agenda for timely realization, stating that upon completion, it would facilitate the efficient transport of raw materials, passengers, and freight over long distances.

Furthermore, Alkali expressed optimism regarding the project’s contribution to the area’s development upon its completion.

Discussing project timelines, he mentioned plans to segment the project to expedite progress, with the aim to complete the Kano-Daura section by 2025, Daura to Maradi by 2026, and Dutse to Kano also by 2026.

Shifting focus to another railway initiative, Alkali announced the upcoming commencement of freight services on the Lagos-Kano narrow gauge project in June, a move expected to bolster the country’s GDP.

During an inspection tour of the Kano-Maradi rail corridor project in Kano, Alkali assured Nigerians of the positive impact the freight services would have, citing benefits such as preserving highway infrastructure and reducing road accidents.

Further explaining the developments at the Zawaciki axis, Alkali noted the integration of rail tracks linking the narrow gauge to the Dala dry inland port in Kano, with the potential to enhance business operations and mitigate traffic accidents.

He commended the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) for their progress on the project, recognizing significant improvements since his last visit.

The Kano-Maradi standard gauge railway line, inaugurated during the previous administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, boasts a total length of about 387 km, connecting key trade hubs in Northern Nigeria and the Republic of Niger.

Featuring 12 stations along its route, including stops at Dutse, Gaya, Wudil Kano, Daura, Katsina, Jibia, and Maradi, the rail project is poised to enhance regional connectivity and facilitate economic growth.
