Fire Incident Blamed for Collapse of National Grid by TCN

According to TCN, the national grid collapse on Monday was caused by a fire incident.

In a statement by Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs, this cause was revealed.

Nigerians experienced a blackout when the national grid collapsed around 2:40 am, marking the second occurrence in two months.

Fortunately, TCN has confirmed that the grid has now been restored.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared that the national grid is fully restored after a fire incident at the Afam power generating station led to a partial disruption of the grid,” the statement said.

At 02:41Hrs on April 15, 2024, a fire broke out at the Afam V 330kV bus bar coupler, resulting in the tripping of units at Afam III and Afam VI. This caused a sudden loss in generation capacity of 25MW and 305MW, respectively, destabilizing the grid and causing a partial collapse.

During this incident, the Ibom Power plant was disconnected from the grid and was providing power to parts of the Port Harcourt Region, reducing the impact of the disruption. TCN confirmed that the affected grid section has been fully restored and stabilized,” the statement explained.

Despite this restoration, some parts of Nigeria are still without power since midnight.
