Conflict Arises Between Suspended Treasurer and Spokesman Over LP Chairman’s Re-election

Mrs. Oluchi Opara, the suspended National Treasurer of the Labour Party, strongly criticizes the re-election of Julius Abure as the new national chairman of the party.

Abure secured his second term as the national chairman during the recent convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, receiving unanimous support from delegates. His leadership has been marred by conflicts with the Joe Ajaero-led Nigeria Labour Congress over control of the party.

The NLC had demanded Abure’s resignation and even sent a letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission, urging them to refrain from supporting the National Convention of the Party.

The re-election of Abure has sparked mixed reactions among party members who have taken different sides on the matter.

In response to the convention, Opara expressed to our correspondent on Thursday her dissatisfaction with the process, alleging that it was carried out secretly.

She remarked, “What kind of convention was that? How can a convention be held in secrecy? It seemed more like a gathering of Abure’s supporters rather than a proper political convention.”

On the other hand, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, emphasized the successful completion of the convention and highlighted the need to address internal conflicts within the party.

He urged the party leadership and disgruntled members to realign their perspectives and collaborate with the newly elected chairman, emphasizing that the convention was conducted in accordance with the party’s rules, electoral laws, and constitution.

Ifoh stated, “We have no reasons to be apprehensive. The convention is concluded, and now our focus is on resolution rather than confrontation to bridge any existing gaps.”
