Protest Erupts in Umuahia over Navy Cadet’s Death in Swimming Pool, Abia Government Assures Justice

An Abia-born Cadet Officer, Emmanuel Onyeomereneche, was tragically found dead in the swimming pool of Hotel Royal Damgrate last week, prompting protests in Umuahia. The Abia State government has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Navy Commander Macdonald Uba (Rted), the Special Adviser to the Abia State Governor on Security Matters, assured the community of Okwuta-Ibeku, Umuahia North LGA, that those responsible for the officer’s death would be held accountable.

Uba expressed sympathy for the family and community, promising to bring the matter to the Governor’s attention. He applauded the protesters for their peaceful approach and urged them to maintain order, with an assurance that the investigation’s findings would be shared with them.

“The incident has had far-reaching implications. We will investigate it thoroughly and ensure justice prevails. As a former cadet, I understand your emotions and the impact on the community,” Uba stated.

Prior to Uba’s remarks, representatives from Okwuta-Isieke Autonomous Community, including the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Chibuzor Onwukamuche, Prince James Onyeomereneche, and Mrs. Happiness Ebere, expressed their grievances over the untimely death of Emmanuel Onyeomereneche. They raised suspicions about the circumstances, pointing fingers at his friend Valentine Okpechi and the hotel management.

The protesters, after laying palm fronds in front of Damgrete hotel, marched through several roads before reaching the Abia State House of Assembly to demand justice.
