Cross River State Government Takes Initiative in Compensating Landowners Affected by Road and Airport Projects

The governor of Cross River, Bassey Otu, announced that the state government would no longer rely on the Federal Government to compensate landowners impacted by the reconstruction of the Calabar-Uyo federal highway before proceeding with the project.

To prevent any delays in the rehabilitation of the road, Governor Otu emphasized that his administration would proceed with compensating affected landowners promptly.

Following the 4th State Executive Council meeting, Otu stated, “To ensure that the construction work on the Calabar-Itu highway, specifically the Odukpani section, maintains its momentum, we have decided to initiate compensation payments to landowners affected by the road expansion.

“The Council has approved the allocation of Four Hundred Million Naira (N 400,000,000.00) for this purpose.

“Nonetheless, the responsibility of compensating displaced individuals and affected structures still lies with the Federal Government.”

Regarding the compensation process, Otu clarified that only landowners whose properties were identified for demolition originally would receive compensation.

Furthermore, Governor Otu reassured communities located near the Obudu International Passenger and Cargo Airport that the government remains dedicated to resolving compensation issues related to the land acquisition for the airport.

Captain Eno Utum Inah (rtd), the Commissioner for Aviation, disclosed that plans are in the final stages of completion to address the compensation for landowners in the airport project vicinity.

“I cannot say that compensation for the land acquisition for the project was neglected. It appears that some individuals believed they deserved more compensation than others, while some felt left out. Nevertheless, the Ministry of Aviation is currently documenting those with complaints and collaborating with relevant agencies to address the concerns. I can assure you that the matter will be resolved amicably and a solution will be reached soon,” he assured.
