UBEC’s Initiative to Introduce Technology and Educate Teachers from Rural Schools Nationwide

Aiming to revamp basic education, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) is set to incorporate technology in classrooms and provide training for 1,480 teachers chosen from rural and hard-to-reach schools all over Nigeria.

Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, announced during the kick-off event in Abuja that SMART schools are being established across the country, along with training for teachers in digital literacy to help them integrate technology into their teaching methods.

He mentioned that the training program will focus on multigrade and mixed ability teaching approaches, with 40 teachers per state participating.

“The Commission is investing in bringing technology into our educational institutions. SMART schools are being developed nationwide, and teachers are being equipped with digital skills to facilitate the utilization of technology in classrooms, including rural areas,” Dr. Bobboyi stated.

In addressing the challenges faced in delivering quality education in rural and hard-to-reach areas due to the shortage of qualified teachers, he emphasized the importance of this initiative in attracting and retaining students in schools.

The program, which aims to enhance teachers’ skills in managing learners at different levels within a single classroom, promotes inclusive learning environments for all students to thrive.

UBEC’s Deputy Executive Secretary, Technical, Prof. Bala Zakari, highlighted the importance of capacity building in multigrade/mixed classroom pedagogies to enhance teaching effectiveness in remote areas.

Mr. Mayowa Aleshin, the Director of Teacher Development at UBEC, emphasized that the training signifies the government’s commitment to addressing educational challenges in various locations nationwide.

Mrs. Folake Olatunji-David, representing the Director of Basic Education at the Ministry of Education, stressed the benefits of equipping teachers with the necessary tools and techniques to excel in diverse educational settings.

She mentioned that the training focuses on creating engaging lessons, fostering collaborative learning environments, and utilizing innovative teaching methods to maximize learning outcomes, especially in areas with limited resources.
