Reps threaten action against companies snubbing invitations

Committee Warns of Consequences for Companies Refusing Invitations

During a recent session at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, Lilian Orogbu, the Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee overseeing the Corporate Social Responsibility practices of international oil companies in the South-South region, issued a stern warning to firms that have been disregarding invitations from the committee.

Orogbu, who represents Waka North/Awka South Federal Constituency in Anambra State, emphasized that the committee will not hesitate to impose sanctions on companies that continue to ignore their requests. She made it clear that the committee’s intention is to ensure that these companies operate with a high level of responsibility and benefit the communities where they are situated.

Addressing the companies directly, Orogbu stated, “Our goal is to collaborate with you to ensure that your operations are conducted responsibly, and the communities in which you operate feel a sense of satisfaction from your presence. We are all striving towards a better Nigeria, and it is crucial that our citizens have hope and see tangible benefits.”

She further added, “If we observe lack of compliance from any company, we will provide guidance, but continuous disregard for our inquiries will lead to consequences. Let us work together constructively, and avoid any perception of antagonism.”

Regarding the ongoing hearing, Orogbu mentioned that it serves as a follow-up to a previous session held on March 6, intending to evaluate the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility by oil companies. She highlighted the strategic importance of the South-South region in Nigeria’s economy and stressed the need for companies to act responsibly in alignment with the Petroleum Industry Act of 2021.

Encouraging transparency and national commitment from all participating companies, Orogbu expressed the committee’s desire to collaborate for the mutual benefit of businesses and the communities they operate in.
