The Commitment of Iran to Foster Strong Relations with African Nations

In a recent meeting in Tehran, Iranian Defence Minister Mohammad-Reza Gharaei Ashtiani conveyed Iran’s eagerness to strengthen friendly ties with African countries, with a special emphasis on the “independent and revolutionary” nation of Zimbabwe.

Reports from local media reveal that this statement was made during a discussion with visiting Vice President of Zimbabwe, Constantino Chiwenga.

Ashtiani highlighted the significance of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s visit to Harare in July 2023 and the forthcoming trip by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa to Tehran, indicating a mutual commitment to enhancing bilateral relations.

He noted that Africa has held a special position in Iran’s foreign policy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution victory.

During the dialogue, the Iranian defense minister criticized the West for its perceived double standards in counterterrorism efforts and its silence on Israel’s actions against Palestinians, particularly children in Gaza.

Responding, the Zimbabwean vice president pointed to Israel’s attack on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, condemning the West’s inconsistent policies.

He expressed solidarity with Iran, highlighting that both nations face sanctions from Western countries and emphasizing the readiness of Harare to expand defense cooperation and economic ties with Iran.
