Police in Lagos Criticize Estate Security Personnel for Preventing Officers’ Access to Premises

In a recent development, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, expressed disappointment over the behavior of estate security officials who require routine checks before allowing police officers entry into their premises.

His comments, shared via his X handle on Friday, came after an individual identified as @AyBenson accused Ogombo Division police operatives of assaulting an estate security guard on Wednesday, April 24.

The accuser alleged that the security guard was conducting necessary checks when around 10 officers approached him aggressively, resulting in physical harm including broken teeth.

Hundeyin remarked, “It is regrettable and concerning that police officers responding to an incident at an estate are hindered by the security personnel at the gate requesting ‘due diligence checks,’ in your own words.

“Blocking law enforcement officials while they perform their duties is unlawful. Resisting arrest is also a punishable offense. The use of force will be limited but necessary when required.

“While addressing claims regarding the conduct of police officers within the estate, I find it peculiar that the estate residents’ association has not raised these issues with the Lagos State Police Command, especially considering the open communication channels we have with all Community Development Associations and estate residents primarily through their Chief Security Officers.”
