Peter Obi Criticizes 2024 Budget, Emphasizes Importance of Citizen Welfare

Expressing his deep concerns about the 2024 budget, Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, is determined to continue highlighting the critical impact of the budget on citizens’ lives, particularly those who are less fortunate.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Obi underlined that the budget’s various shortcomings have far-reaching consequences for the country’s progress and the well-being of its people.

“It is clear that certain aspects of the budget do not align with our current circumstances, necessitating a review and proper reallocation of funds to address pressing needs for the nation’s welfare,” stated Obi.

Raising concerns about specific allocations in the budget, Obi spotlighted a few key points.

He criticized the allocation of N15 billion exclusively for the National Assembly hospital, which he deemed unacceptable, especially considering it surpasses the combined budgetary allocation to major teaching hospitals across the nation.

Additionally, he questioned the N15.3 billion earmarked for the National Assembly library project and book procurement, including the e-Library.

Obi further expressed reservations about the N10 billion allocated for the Senate’s and House of Representatives’ car parks and the National Assembly Recreation Centre, insisting it was disproportionate compared to the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation.

Calling for a reevaluation of spending priorities, a thorough review of the budget, and the removal of unnecessary expenses, Obi emphasized the need for prudent resource allocation.

“The insensitivity shown towards the current challenges faced by the people is unacceptable for any nation aiming for progress. Redirecting all limited resources towards sectors that enhance economic productivity is crucial,” declared Obi.

He stressed the importance of reassessing national priorities, scrutinizing the budget, eliminating wasteful spending, and directing resources effectively for the well-being of the citizens. Building a prosperous nation requires a foundation of responsible resource management and strategic investments,” he concluded.
