Acting PDP National Chairman Views Position Differently, Says Damagum

Illya Umar Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has emphasized that his role does not hold the weight of life or death.

In Abuja, Damagun informed journalists about his stance following the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) expressing a vote of confidence in him.

The NWC’s endorsement of Damagum occurred during the 584th meeting at the Party’s National Secretariat on Tuesday.

Appreciating Damagun’s contributions, the NWC lauded his efforts and commitment to enhancing and reaffirming the PDP’s position as the primary opposition party in Nigeria.

The motion for a Vote of Confidence in the Acting National Chairman was initiated by the Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja, supported by the National Vice Chairman (South East), Chief Ali Odefa, and seconded by the National Treasurer, Yayari Mohammed.

However, Damagum conveyed that the struggle for retaining his position holds little significance for him, affirming that a change in leadership would not diminish his standing within the PDP.

He stated, “This is not a matter of life and death. I remain an elected member of this NEC. Even if I return to the position of Deputy National Chairman, I’m still an NWC member. The question of survival does not arise.”

Damagum assumed the role of PDP National Chairman during the preparations for the 2023 presidential elections, succeeding his predecessor, Iyorchia Ayu, who was removed by the NWC.
