Call for Implementation of N30,000 Minimum Wage by NLC in Gombe State

In Gombe State, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Yusuf Aish, is urging the government to fully implement the N30,000 minimum wage. During the May Day celebration themed “People First” at the Pantami Stadium, Aish emphasized the need for complete enforcement of the minimum wage, pointing out that its implementation in Gombe State is still incomplete.

Aish highlighted disparities in the implementation across various sectors, noting that the health sector is at 65 per cent compliance while other civil service sectors are yet to reach full implementation. He also raised concerns about the challenges faced by local government workers, with some areas unable to even pay 10 per cent of the minimum wage.

Recognizing the economic difficulties faced by workers, Aish stressed the importance of transitioning from a minimum wage to a living wage. He emphasized the need for balance in implementing the remaining N30,000 minimum wage and enhancing allowances for state civil service workers.

Addressing the issue of taxation, Aish stated that tax waivers should be granted until the government can implement the minimum wage uniformly. He highlighted the discrepancies in minimum wage payment among local government areas, revealing that some areas could only afford to pay a fraction of the required amount.

Calling for a shift towards a living wage, Aish underscored the necessity of human development to address social challenges and reduce crime rates. Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, reiterated the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, emphasizing the administration’s labor-friendly stance that has fostered peace and development.
