Mesut Ozil: Barcelona is the Reason for El Clasico’s Decline

In anticipation of Real Madrid’s La Liga El Clasico clash with Barcelona on Sunday, former Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil has asserted that the decline of El Clasico is primarily due to Barcelona’s performance.

Ozil expressed his views to Marca, highlighting Barcelona’s diminishing potential.

Reflecting on the past, Ozil remarked, “At that time, it was regarded as the most significant fixture in world football. Unfortunately, Pep’s Barça was possibly the best Barça in history. Their level was unparalleled, distinctly different from the present-day Barcelona.”

He added, “I believe that currently, global attention is more drawn towards matches such as Liverpool vs. Manchester City or other encounters in the Premier League. Regrettably, I feel that the significance of the Clásico has waned, and that’s disheartening.”

Ozil further commented, “However, this decline cannot be attributed to Real Madrid, as they are unquestionably one of the premier teams globally. The issue lies with Barcelona, who have experienced a decline in their capabilities. They are grappling; they are striving. While they boast quality players across all positions, this season, they have been plagued by numerous injuries. Perhaps, they should introspect and rectify their own errors instead of consistently harping on about the referees.”
