Market Cleanup: Lagos Authorities Cracking Down on Styrofoam

Authorities from the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources conducted operations to confiscate styrofoam food packaging in various markets spread across different local government areas within the state.

On Friday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, shared photos and a video on social media showcasing the enforcement activities.

Wahab mentioned, “Enforcement agencies under the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources ramped up efforts to remove banned styrofoam food packaging from markets statewide.”

He also revealed, “Yesterday, the environmental enforcement team targeted shops in areas like Ikorodu Local Government, Mosan Okunola Local Government, Badagry Local Government, Amuwo Odofin, Ojo Local Government, Somolu, Eti-Ota East LCDA, Eti-Osa Local Government, and other parts of Lagos.”

Wahab confirmed that all confiscated items would be incinerated at Marini TLS in Bolade, Oshodi.

He urged, “We call upon all residents of Lagos to refrain from using, distributing, and selling banned styrofoam packaging across the entire state.”

Earlier in January, PUNCH Online reported that the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, had imposed a ban on the usage and distribution of styrofoam and other single-use plastics throughout the state.

In February, the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Kunle Adeshina, disclosed the seizure of styrofoam containers weighing a total of 169kg from various markets, which were then sent to Marini TLS for disposal.
