Malaria Prevalence in Edo State at 30% – Government

A recent report indicates that the malaria prevalence rate in Edo State stands at 30% as disclosed by the Edo Malaria Elimination Programme manager, Dr. Williams Iyekekpolor during a press briefing in Benin. He highlighted the state’s commitment to achieving the World Health Organization’s goal of zero malaria by 2030, citing a reduction from 50% to 30% within two years.

Dr. Iyekekpolor emphasized the need for collective action to combat malaria, stating that Nigeria still accounts for 25% of malaria prevalence nationally, with Edo State contributing 30% based on the 2020 data.

He mentioned that the state government is providing free malaria testing and treatment at Primary Health Care centers using rapid diagnostic tests. Additionally, the state insurance scheme offers affordable malaria treatment for enrolled patients.

Highlighting the theme of the 2024 World Malaria Day, “Accelerating the Fight Against Malaria for a More Equitable World” with the slogan “Change the Narrative; Do the Needful,” Dr. Iyekekpolor stressed the importance of preventive measures like sleeping under insecticidal nets, maintaining a clean environment, and seeking prompt treatment for malaria cases.

He also mentioned that the state planned a road walk and free malaria screening and treatment as part of the activities to commemorate World Malaria Day.
