Iranian court sentences rapper to death for backing anti-hijab protests

Toomaj Salehi, an Iranian rapper, has been given the death penalty by an Iranian court for his support of anti-hijab protests.

Having spent over 18 months in jail for endorsing the series of demonstrations that followed the death of Mahsa Amini, who passed away shortly after her arrest for wearing an “inappropriate” hijab in 2022, Salehi now faces a dire fate.

According to his lawyer, Amir Raisian, “Toomaj Salehi was sentenced to death for corruption on Earth by Branch 1 of Isfahan Revolutionary Court.”

Arrested in October 2022 for openly championing the anti-hijab protests, Salehi was accused by the Revolutionary Court of aiding sedition, participating in unlawful assemblies, spreading propaganda against the government, and inciting riots.

Upon a review of the case by the Iranian Supreme Court, a directive was issued to the lower court to address any shortcomings in the sentence.

However, Raisian pointed out that the lower court went against the Supreme Court’s decision, asserting its autonomy and refusing to make adjustments to the ruling.

The lawyer added that Salehi intends to lodge an appeal against the sentence.
