Anglican Bishop Ibezim: ‘Hunger and Poverty Pose a Threat to National Unity’

The Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, Archbishop of the Province of Niger and Bishop of the Diocese of Awka within the Anglican Communion, highlighted the detrimental impact of poverty and hunger on the peace and unity of the nation. Speaking at the 2nd Session of the 13th Synod of the Diocese of Awka in Awka, he emphasized the urgent need for authorities to address the economic and security challenges faced by the populace.

He lamented the continuous rise in food prices and other essential commodities despite efforts by the federal government. Ibezim criticized the economic policies of the current administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, stating they lack vital economic values and urged for an overhaul of these policies.

The Archbishop called for a state of emergency to be declared on poverty and hunger in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for urgent action. He also advocated for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

Ibezim pointed out that the challenges faced by Nigerians are exacerbated by the weakening naira, forex exchange situation, and the escalating prices of fuel, cooking gas, kerosene, and electricity tariffs. He warned against the impending economic and political peril facing the country, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention by the leadership.

He stressed the importance of addressing injustice as a crucial step towards national progress, highlighting that the ingrained sense of injustice among the people cannot be suppressed by force alone but requires the administration of justice. May God guide and help our nation, Nigeria, during these challenging times.
