German and British Diplomats in Israel for Crisis Talks

Engaging in crisis diplomacy, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and British Foreign Secretary David Cameron visited Israel on Wednesday.

Cameron advocated for a prudent response from Israel to the recent Iranian attack, emphasizing the importance of a strategic yet restrained reaction to avoid escalating tensions.

He stressed the significance of prioritizing the release of Israeli hostages, facilitating aid delivery to Gaza, and securing a ceasefire in the region. His agenda included discussions with the Israeli government and Palestinian Authority on these critical matters.

During their trip, Baerbock and Cameron met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and scheduled further discussions with senior Israeli officials in a coordinated approach, as per the German Foreign Office.

In addition to her engagements with Herzog, Baerbock also held talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, marking her seventh visit to Israel following the deadly October 7 attacks orchestrated by Hamas.

She is slated to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former opposition leader Benny Gantz, a member of the Israeli war Cabinet, before concluding her visit later on Wednesday.

The main concern of the talks is the potential escalation of the conflict in Gaza into a broader regional war.

Recent events saw Iran launching significant air assaults on Israel in retaliation for an attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus, prompting Israeli authorities to announce a severe response against Iran.

International allies of Israel are expressing apprehensions that such retaliatory actions could trigger a dangerous cycle of violence and are urging for caution in handling the situation.
