The Challenge of Fuel Scarcity: The Long Road to Redemption in Nigeria – Professor Ezeilo

Professor Joy Ezeilo, a former United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Trafficking, believes that the path to redemption in Nigeria is a challenging one.

She emphasized that despite the challenges, the people of Nigeria are determined to seek redemption and remain hopeful for a more accountable public sector.

Having served as the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in Enugu State, Prof. Ezeilo shared her thoughts on the current situation in the country through her social media platform.

The ongoing fuel scarcity, fluctuating petroleum prices, and unmet promises regarding the local refineries have been a cause of concern for Prof. Ezeilo.

She expressed disappointment over the lack of accountability among public officials who have failed to fulfill their obligations, leading to a sense of distrust among the Nigerian populace.

Citing the recent news of the purported completion of the Port Harcourt refinery turnaround, Prof. Ezeilo questioned the transparency and efficiency of such projects, highlighting the need for concrete actions over empty promises.

She pointed out, “The recurring fuel scarcity and arbitrary petroleum price hikes persist, with little transparency from the NNPC on the root causes. Unfulfilled promises surrounding local refineries and the lack of accountability from public officials continue to prevail.”

Reflecting on the situation, Prof. Ezeilo remarked, “The journey to redemption in Nigeria may be lengthy, but it is a path we are dedicated to walking. We are unwavering in our pursuit of a more responsible public sector!”
