House of Representatives takes action on electricity tariff hike and fuel scarcity

Following motions presented by Shehu Ajilo and Kama Nkem Karama, the House of Representatives has ordered the suspension of the electricity tariff hike by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC. Simultaneously, the Minister of Petroleum Resources has been summoned to address the ongoing fuel scarcity.

The decision to suspend the tariff hike and summon the Minister of Petroleum Resources stemmed from concerns about the tariff increment by NERC during the parliamentary recess, coupled with the widespread fuel shortage caused by NNPC Limited’s inability to supply products to marketers.

The House quickly acted on the motion regarding the petroleum scarcity without engaging in debate, ensuring swift measures to address the issue. The Minister of Petroleum Resources has been mandated to appear before the House to provide necessary explanations.

In a separate motion introduced by Nkemkanma, the House authorized the summoning of the Minister of Power before a special committee to investigate the electricity tariff hike. This motion was also endorsed without further discussion.
