Residents of Ibadan Stranded due to Fuel Scarcity, Facing Increased Transportation Fares

In Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, commuters, travelers, and residents find themselves stranded with the lack of available commercial transportation modes such as buses, motorcycles, and tricycles.

The issue began early on Monday and has persisted through Tuesday, causing inconvenience to many.

Areas affected by this situation include Apete, Awotan, Sango, Mokola, Agodi Gate, Idi-Ape, Iwo Road, Montan, Agbowo, University of Ibadan, Mokola, Total Garden, Secretariat Road, Ijokodo, and Bodija.

Observations reveal that a significant number of people in the city are stuck due to the unavailability of petrol in these localities.

As a consequence of the scarcity, operators of commercial buses, motorcycles, and tricycles have opted to raise their fares, thus leaving many individuals stranded at various bus stops.

Witnesses have seen residents having to walk even short distances due to the lack of affordable transportation options.

For instance, the fare from Sango to UI, previously N100, has now doubled to N200, while a tricycle ride from Mokola to Gate has risen from N150 to N200.

Similarly, a trip from Mokola to Bodija, which used to cost N200, now stands at N300.

One resident named Tolu expressed frustration over the high cost of transportation, citing an example where she had to pay N1,000 for a motorcycle ride from University College Hospital to the University of Ibadan.

She stated, “It is worrisome; I spent N1000 from UCH to UI today. There is no fuel, and I can’t even bring my car. There is no clear passage as most roads are congested.”
