Airport in Lagos experiences flight diversions due to fire outbreak

Flight operations were redirected by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, on Thursday following a fire incident at the E wing of the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, MMIA.

Reports indicate that the fire ignited in the early hours of Thursday after smoke was spotted at E54 bridge.

Emergency responders from the Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services, ARFFS, swiftly acted to contain the fire, which had resulted in a power outage within the old international terminal section.

Mrs. Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, confirmed the fire incident and praised the prompt response of the airport firefighting team.

“At 05:29 hrs, smoke was observed emanating from the E54 Bridge, prompting electrical engineers to promptly disconnect power supply to the entire E Wing,” she stated.

While initial suspicions suggest sparks from an electrical unit as the likely cause, a thorough investigation is underway to determine the fire’s origin. The situation, which escalated into a fire, was contained by 06:41 hrs.

“Efforts are ongoing to clear the smoke from the building. Meanwhile, flight activities in Terminal 1 of MMA have been rerouted to the D Wing,” Orah explained.
