Fire causes havoc at Lagos supermarket, woman rescued

A fire broke out at Globus supermarket near the Festac link bridge in the Amuwo Odofin Local Government area of Lagos state, causing traffic congestion in Apple Junction on Monday.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, stated that firefighters responded to the incident around 12:30pm. During the operation, they successfully rescued an adult woman who was trapped in the building.

According to a statement released, the Isolo, Ajegunle, and Bolade Fire Stations were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:22 hours local time. The blaze had engulfed a significant portion of the supermarket’s storage area, releasing thick smoke into the air from flammable materials. Various agencies such as LASAMBUS, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Nigerian Police Force provided support during the emergency response effort.

Aside from the supermarket incident, the Agege Fire Crew later recovered the body of a deceased woman, approximately 40 years old, from under a trailer around 1pm on the Abule Egba flyover inward Sango, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in a separate incident.

Additionally, a gas explosion occurred at 32, Coker Compound, off Coker Road, Iganmu, Lagos. The Ilupeju Fire Station found approximately 30 gas cylinders of various sizes in a warehouse, leading to the explosion during the refilling of the FM200 Fire Protection System. Two men were rescued with injuries and taken to a nearby hospital.

The Ikeja Fire Crew of the LSFRS responded to an electrical fire at a multinational firm’s warehouse in Ikeja at around 4pm. They also managed a similar incident at a warehouse on Akanni Doherty Street without further escalation at 16:31 hours.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service emphasizes its dedication to ensuring the safety of residents and businesses in the state and reminds the public to prioritize fire safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
