A legal action has been initiated against Kogi Governor over alleged manipulation of Attah Igala

A group known as Ane Igala Restoration (AIR), representing the Igala nation globally, has taken the Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, to an Abuja High Court. The group accuses the Governor of involving the Atta of Igala in political activities that may tarnish his revered position.

In the lawsuit with number W/1896/24 filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Bwari, the group names several Defendants including the Attorney General of the Federation, Kogi State Attorney General, the Minister of Steel Development, Kogi State Traditional Council, and the Chairman of Igala Area Traditional Council.

The Claimants are seeking a court order to prevent the Defendants from manipulating the Atta Igala and using him for political purposes that do not align with the cultural interests of the Igala people. They also request to prevent the Atta Igala from participating in activities that could tarnish his reputation and position as the spiritual leader of the Igala nation.

Two applications were filed by the Claimants for interim and interlocutory injunctions against the Defendants, particularly to stop the Atta Igala and other traditional rulers from engaging in political visits that could favor the Governor of Kogi State.

During a hearing where the Defendants were absent, the Plaintiffs sought declarations to uphold the dignity and integrity of traditional rulers in the Igala Kingdom and to prevent them from being used for political gains. They also requested an injunction to protect the cultural and traditional essence of the Igala land from political interference.

The court proceedings are ongoing, with the next hearing scheduled for July 11, 2024. The court has ordered that all parties be duly served with the hearing notice.
