Double Collapse of National Grid Causes Nationwide Blackout

Twice in under a month, Nigeria has witnessed the collapse of its national grid. The most recent incident occurred on Thursday, March 28, 2024. This collapse occurred just a week after the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) raised tariffs for Band A power consumers.

Data from the National System Operator, a part of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), indicated that the collapse occurred at 3 a.m. TCN is currently working to restore the grid, with a supply increase to 250 MW. Notably, Abuja and Lagos Disco carried the heaviest load at 80 MW, followed by Ibadan Disco at 50 MW and Benin Disco at 40 MW.

Among the plants on the grid, Ibom Power and Okpai Gas were the top generators, providing 59.50 MW and 117.00 MW, respectively. Despite efforts to contact Mr. Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN for comment on the situation, no response was received to calls and messages.
