Enhanced Security Essential for Benue’s Prosperity, Alia Informs New Police Commissioner

The importance of adequate security in Benue State was emphasized by Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, stating that without it, the state would struggle to thrive as the ‘Food Basket of the Nation’ and ensure food security for its residents and the country at large.

This statement was made during a courtesy visit by the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, CP Hassan Steve Yabane, to the Government House in Makurdi, as revealed in a press statement by Tersoo Kula, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.

Alia expressed worries about the widespread insecurity in the state, including attacks by herders and unknown gunmen that have resulted in the displacement of many residents now seeking shelter in IDP camps.

He also highlighted the presence of internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo Yahoo” or 419, operating in hotels throughout the state.

Governor Alia expressed confidence in CP Yabane’s capabilities to tackle the security challenges, citing his past experience in the state. He urged for proactive measures, especially in the local governments severely affected by insecurity – Kwande, Katsina-Ala, Logo, Ukum, Guma, parts of Makurdi, Gwer West, Gwer East, Apa, and Agatu.

Alia expressed concerns about armed herders encroaching on farmlands during the planting season, stressing the need for stringent policing to address this issue.

In maintaining peace and stability, he called for a collective effort, with a clear statement that his administration would not condone any disruptions to the peace process.

The Governor urged CP Yabane to uphold the rule of law and ensure compliance from all residents.

Additionally, he raised issues concerning roadblocks on routes to Nasarawa and advocated for improved community relations to enhance cooperation between the police and conflict-affected communities.

In response, Yabane assured the governor of his dedication to tackling the security issues in Benue State. He vowed to initiate crime mapping to pinpoint flashpoints and warned criminals to vacate the state or face legal consequences.

Recognizing Benue’s crucial role as the nation’s food supplier, CP Yabane affirmed the police force’s commitment to safeguarding lives and properties.

The visit concluded with both parties expressing their readiness to collaborate in restoring peace and security in Benue State.
