Doctors in Nigeria Begin Indefinite Strike Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic

Amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in Abuja has announced that they will be commencing an indefinite strike starting from March 17th.

Rising from an emergency meeting this morning, the doctors, in a statement released by their president, Roland Aigbovo, stated that they extensively discussed the health threat posed by the coronavirus scare, their work conditions, and patient care before reaching the “difficult decision to go on an indefinite strike.”

The doctors are aggrieved due to the failure of the FCT administration to pay their basic salaries for over two months, leading to the decision to embark on the strike at this time.

Aigbovo mentioned that there have been salary irregularities and shortfalls since the migration to the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System by the FCTA.

This decision comes hours after a third case of Coronavirus was confirmed in Lagos state.
