Senate Approves Bill Introducing Death Penalty for Drug Trafficking on Third Reading

On Thursday, the Senate passed a bill that aims to establish a death penalty for individuals found guilty of drug trafficking during its third reading.

During the session, a report was presented on behalf of the joint committees on judiciary, drugs, and narcotics by Senator Tahir Monguno from Borno North.

Monguno emphasized the importance of enhancing the fight against drug abuse in Nigeria during his presentation.

Following the report presentation, the Senate entered into a discussion on the clauses of the bill in the “committee of the whole,” where some senators expressed objections to the imposition of the death penalty.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole from Edo North cautioned the Senate to exercise caution when dealing with laws involving human life.

Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, responded to Oshiomhole’s concerns by suggesting that he should have requested a division during the session.

Barau stated, “I apologize, my former national chairman, you could have called for a division, as it is your right, but the decision has been made.”

Recently, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported significant drug seizures, including cannabis and opioids, from suspected traffickers.
