Warning from Delta police to POS operators about giving out large sums of money to customers

Operators of Point of Sale (POS) systems in Delta State have been advised by SP Bright Edafe, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, against disbursing amounts as large as N2.5m to customers.

In a recent communication, Edafe emphasized the importance of video recording customers and their companions when it is deemed necessary to release such substantial sums.

Issuing his advisory via social media, Edafe stated, “POS operators should take heed. Releasing an amount as high as N2,500,000 can pose significant risks, especially if the customers are accompanied by potentially dangerous individuals claiming different intentions.”

“There have been instances where kidnappers have revealed that they coerced their victims into transferring ransom money through POS terminals and then demanded cash in person.

“Do not assume it’s just business and you bear no responsibility. Avoid implicating yourself in criminal activities.

“If someone requests a substantial sum, advise them to visit a bank for cash withdrawal or perform a bank transfer.

“Even the Central Bank of Nigeria restricts large withdrawals. Are POS operators above the regulations of the CBN in terms of safety and security? If an exception must be made, ensure to document the customers and their associates via video recording.

“Legitimate customers with genuine intentions should have no issue with being recorded on camera.”
