Court bars EFCC from arresting or detaining Yahaya Bello

A ruling from a Lokoja High Court has prevented the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from arresting, detaining, or prosecuting the former Governor of Kogi state, Alhaji Yayaha Bello.

Judge I. A Jami of court 4, overseeing lawsuit HCL/68/M/2020 brought by the ex-Governor to uphold his fundamental rights against the EFCC, issued a firm order following a previous temporary injunction.

During a two-hour verdict delivered on Wednesday, the court prohibited the EFCC from taking any actions against the applicant without court authorization.

In addition, the court instructed the respondents to cease any further harassment of the Applicant.

At the start of the ruling, the court dismissed the EFCC’s challenge on jurisdiction.

Following the judgment, the Applicant’s legal representatives, S. A Abbas and MS Yusuf, deemed the ruling as a significant milestone. On the other hand, the defendant’s Counsel, T.U Odima and Patrick O. Jibril, concurred with the judgment, acknowledging it as meticulously processed.
