Committee Formed by Kaduna Assembly to Investigate El-Rufai

An investigation committee has been established by the Kaduna State House of Assembly to look into the financial matters, loans, and contract projects that were awarded during the tenure of the former Governor Nasiru El-Rufai.

During a town hall meeting on Saturday, Governor Uba Sani expressed concerns about the significant debt left by his predecessor, El-Rufai, who concluded his term on May 29, 2023.

Sani revealed that the state was left with insufficient funds to cover salaries, stating that his administration inherited a total debt of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual obligations from the previous governor.

“Despite the enormous debt burden of $587 million, N85 billion, and N115 billion in contractual obligations that were inherited from the previous administration, we are committed to advancing Kaduna State towards progress and sustainable development.

“We have conducted a comprehensive evaluation of our current situation and are refining our focus accordingly,” the governor remarked.

On Tuesday, the State Assembly established a fact-finding committee during the plenary session, which is tasked with investigating various aspects, including the financial dealings of the former governor’s close associate and Senior Counselor on Investment, Jimi Lawal.

Furthermore, the committee will delve into financial transactions, loans, grants, and project executions between 2015 and 2023.

In addition, the State Assembly has directed the committee to invite key figures such as former speakers of the 8th and 9th Assembly, finance commissioners, former Managing Directors of Kaduna Markets, Commissioners of Budget and Planning, and others of note.
