Chief Magistrates Court in Ibadan arraigns 29 suspected Yoruba Nation agitators

Coming before the Chief Magistrates Court in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, were 29 individuals believed to be Yoruba Nation agitators. They faced charges in relation to their alleged roles in the recent attempted takeover of the Governor’s Office and the state House of Assembly.

The legal proceedings, under case number Mi/520c/2024, involved the Commissioner of Police and the group of 29 suspects.

Last Saturday, on April 13, 2024, a group of unidentified individuals, suspected to be Yoruba Nation agitators, made an incursion into the state secretariat located in Agodi, Ibadan. Their objective was to raise their flag at the premises before being swiftly neutralized by a team of security forces.

The charges brought against them included seven counts such as treasonable felony, participation in an unlawful society, illegal possession of firearms, and engaging in behavior likely to incite unrest.

During the trial, Investigative Police Officer Bakare Rasaq, an inspector from the State Criminal Investigation Department in Iyaganku, Ibadan, highlighted that the alleged offenses violated Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.

Earlier, on Monday, the State Commissioner of Police, Hamzat Adebola, had publicly presented a group of 20 suspects connected to the incident.
