Appeal for Assistance for Victims of Dosunmu Market Fire

Expressing solidarity, the Chairman of the Isale Eko Descendants Union, Adeniji Kazeem (SAN), conveyed sympathies to the victims of the recent fire outbreak at Dosumu Market on Lagos Island.

During a visit to the site with union members, Kazeem commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s prompt actions following the incident that resulted in the destruction of several buildings at the market.

Former Lagos State Commissioner for Justice, Kazeem, also acknowledged the Governor’s directive to clear shanties and unauthorized structures in the affected area post the fire outbreak.

The devastating fire incident, which occurred last Tuesday, led to the destruction of at least 14 buildings, with four of them collapsing as reported by the Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Authority, Ibrahim Farinloye.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, referring to the disaster as “preventable,” attributed it to negligence. He subsequently ordered the temporary closure of the market to ensure safety compliance with regulations.

Highlighting the urgent necessity for a comprehensive overhaul in the Lagos Island Central Business District, the IDU Chairman stressed the union’s advocacy for enhanced fire safety protocols, improved infrastructure, and stricter enforcement mechanisms to avert recurrent calamities.

In his address, the Chairman urged unity and support for the affected community members to facilitate the recovery and redevelopment process at the CBD. He reiterated the commitment of the Isale Eko Descendants Union to collaborate with governmental bodies and stakeholders to restore and invigorate the community for a prosperous future.

Citing the need for collective efforts, Kazeem concluded, “Let us come together to rebuild, revitalize, and secure a more promising tomorrow, fostering a safer and vibrant environment for all residents of Lagos Island.”
