Alan Shearer on Man Utd star’s Position in England’s Euro 2024 squad

Alan Shearer, the legendary figure from Newcastle United, has expressed his concerns about the potential selection of Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford in England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Shearer believes that Rashford’s spot in the squad is in jeopardy and he may be left out of Gareth Southgate’s final selection if his performances do not improve by the end of the season.

Rashford was benched in England’s recent friendly match, a 2-2 draw against Belgium, and only played for 15 minutes in the 1-0 loss to Brazil.

Discussing Rashford’s situation, Shearer, quoted by The Athletic, remarked, “If Rashford can demonstrate good form in the upcoming matches, he might compel the manager to include him. However, his spot is not guaranteed.”

“He is not primarily a center-forward; he is reluctant to play in that role. His inclusion would likely be as a versatile forward who can also fill in as a striker if needed,” Shearer added.

“From his demeanor, it is evident that playing as a forward at Manchester United is not his preference. If he makes it to the squad, he would not displace Harry Kane, Watkins, or Toney, but rather be an alternative wide forward,” he elaborated.

Furthermore, Shearer stated, “Both Grealish and Rashford are facing intense competition for their spots. The decision is tough, but Gareth has a plethora of options to choose from in attack, unlike defensively where the choices are limited.”
