In Maryland, USA, divers successfully retrieved two bodies amidst the extensive search for workers who fell into the water when a cargo ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
After diving to a depth of 25 feet, the team uncovered a red pickup truck trapped underwater at the center of the bridge with the bodies of Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, from Baltimore, and Dorlian Castillo Cabrera, 26, from Dundalk.
The identification of the victims was confirmed by Maryland State Police Superintendent, Col. Roland Butler, who had also informed the families of the deceased individuals.
Due to safety concerns caused by the surrounding superstructure and debris, the operation has shifted from recovery to salvage, as mentioned by Butler. Unfortunately, four more workers are still missing and presumed deceased.
The missing individuals hailed from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, according to reports.
Butler declared the conclusion of all search efforts, with authorities believing that other vehicles with victims inside are entombed within the collapsed bridge’s superstructures based on sonar analysis.
The tragic incident occurred when a cargo ship, owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd. and chartered by Maersk, struck a support pillar, leading to the bridge’s collapse as it was en route from Baltimore to Sri Lanka.
