The man arrested in Mexico for the death of the 21-year-old Spanish student, Claudia Tacoronte, admitted this Friday to local authorities that he was responsible for the murder.
Francisco Javier Meléndez, known as ‘El Trompas’, was arrested this morning after being sought and captured for the murder of the young Spanish woman on September 12 in the State of Morelos, in the town of Cuautla.
As explained by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, the man has confessed to the facts. Likewise, the minister took the opportunity to thank his Mexican counterpart, Roberto Velasco, for the “speed” with which the arrest was carried out.
In an audio message released by his Ministry, Albares explained that he spoke this Friday with the Mexican Foreign Minister, who informed him that the alleged murderer “has been arrested and has already confessed to being responsible for the events.”
No escape
The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection of Mexico, Omar García Harfuch, announced this Thursday the arrest of Francisco Javier Meléndez, alias ‘El Trompas’, as the alleged perpetrator of the murder of Tacoronte, a 21-year-old student who was on an exchange at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM).
And at the time of the murder, security cameras near the scene captured the individual fleeing the scene. In addition, various testimonies identified the perpetrator by his clothing.
However, the governor of Morelos, Margarita González Saravia, has assured that the arrest “does not mean that the case is closed.” “The facts must be clarified to determine the responsibilities, according to the law, of this individual,” he explained, while ensuring that the feminicide will be clarified.
For his part, the Morelos prosecutor, Fernando Blumenkron Escobar, has reported that a sentence of 70 years will be requested, this being the maximum provided in state legislation. According to Escobar himself, the motive for the murder would be the theft of the student’s mobile phone. However, the way in which the detainee attacked Claudia Tacoronte and the characteristics of the injuries he inflicted allow the Prosecutor’s Office to sustain the accusation of femicide.
“The injuries he inflicted on Claudia allow us to establish that what happened was a femicide, due to the way in which he did it,” the prosecutor stated during a press conference.
